Siemens A70 TriBand

Summary

An exceptional value without complexity or fanfare is provided in this no-frills international cell phone. This simple German-made Siemens handset lacks most bells and whistles but remains a top seller because it delivers on the core benefits of cell phone service across multiple countries at a low price point. If you are not traveling to countries where quad-band coverage is required (South America and the Caribbean) this phone will be sufficient for your needs. If you want quad-band coverage, or something a little more up-to-date, please consider the Motorola RAZR ($129) or Motorola KRZR ($179).

Tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900
Works in Europe, Asia, parts of USA

Our take: If you want a decent budget-phone to use with RangeRoamer, this is the one to get. It is easy to use and is stripped of all camera/mp3/color features to keep cost down while still retaining good build quality for the price. This phone feels small and comfortable in hand. The keys are not mushy. Voice quality is good.

Description:

This is your basic run-of-the-mill candybar phone. Its main benefits are: good build quality, ease of use, and the lack of gimmicky bells and whistles.

The simple things are often the best. A well-structured keypad layout provides for intuitive use of the A70. The menu has been reduced to the essentials in order to enable the easiest possible navigation.

Ratings

Ease of Use

Since there are relatively few features, this phone is pretty easy to use. However, the chances of your having used a Siemens handset before are likely slim, meaning you'll need to spend a few minutes familiarizing yourself with its nuances.

Coverage

Although decent, this phone lacks quad-band coverage which means it will not work in countries that use the 850 Mhz band, currently in use in Mexico, the Carribean, Central and Latin America, and parts of the USA. This phone also lacks the bands necessary for Japan and South Korea.

Value

For a travel phone, this is as low cost as it gets.

Build Quality

This phone's plastic shell will not win awards for exuding luxury.

Features

Not a whole lot going on here. You'll get a basic phone that's great for phone calls and not much more. It has a vibrating alert and an alarm clock.
